Students bring passion for science to the people

A group of young scientists from the University of Sheffield have founded a unique organisation this week (Friday 5 March 2010), designed to bring science to the masses in fun and accessible ways.

Science Brainwaves has been established to promote scientific research and demonstrate how interesting the subject can be for the general public. The group was founded by a team of PhD and postdoc researchers, who will take their enthusiasm of science to the public through a variety of engaging events.

The group, who have already organised a successful Christmas Lecture on vaccines, want to break down the barriers to science and help the public understand the research behind the controversial science headlines in the media. They have a broad range of events planned for the coming year. Everyone from kids to the elderly will find something that interests them.

Events will include workshops, lectures and more unconventional events such as Guerrilla SciBar where unsuspecting pub-goers get treated to random science performances or impromptu quizzes. The team´s fresh enthusiasm has already won them support from the British Science Association, which has integrated Science Brainwaves events into their own calendar.

They have also set up a website that will contain lots of fascinating science, with news, podcasts and blogs. They hope that this will become a one stop shop for anyone interested in popular science. The website will also detail all the information on their upcoming events.

Martin Turner, co-founder and PhD student in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, explains why they have decided to create Science Brainwaves: "We want the public to understand that what scientists do is really exciting and that science shouldn´t be feared but enjoyed. We realised that most people see science as something difficult to understand and even boring. We as scientists need to change that perception. "
